All adults in India will get free COVID-19 vaccinations, according to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In an attempt to stem the flow of a pandemic that has killed hundreds of thousands in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that the Indian federal government would give COVID-19 vaccinations free of charge to all adults beginning later this month.

In a televised speech, Modi said that the federal government will take over immunization duties from state governments.

“It has been determined that all people over the age of 18 will get vaccinated for free beginning June 21,” he stated.

Previously, the federal government provided free vaccinations to the elderly and frontline workers, while state governments and private hospitals were responsible for administering doses to persons aged 18 to 45 for a charge.
